While other teams like the Suns and Bucks reportedly pursued Smart as a free agent, turns out, Luka Doncic helped recruit Smart to Los Angeles. Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Doncic "reached out to Smart and made it clear that he wanted to play with the two-way stalwart."
So this latest chapter is especially wild. Smart is going to join the Los Angeles Lakers. For many Boston fans, it feels like traitorous behavior. The Celtics took Smart at No. 6 overall in 2014 out of Oklahoma State. He spent nine years in Boston as one of the best defenders in the league, a span that included a Defensive Player of the Year honor.
